The Mida Creek Forest

They call them the ‘roots of the sea’, and it’s a fitting description for this forest.

The Mida Creek forest is a whopping 32 km long and is a UNESCO-recognized natural heritage site that will take your breath away with its wild beauty and ecological importance. This unique ecosystem is located between the beaches of Watamu and the village of Mida, in a deep creek on the coast that provides a tranquil refuge for the local flora and fauna.

A natural paradise

The Mida Creek mangrove system is home to a whole range of bird, fish, crustacean and mollusc species, and is a nesting and refuge site for lots of migratory birds, including pelicans, herons and kingfishers. When the tide is low, you can see pink flamingos gathering in the shallows, looking for food.

The mangroves are a vital resource for maintaining the area’s overall health and prosperity. They protect the land from bad weather, make the water less turbid and provide shelter for the many animal species that lay their eggs and live in the shade of this natural structure. The people living nearby also rely on the mangroves for the plants, animals and water in the area.

What to do in Mida Creek

If you love nature in its wildest form, the Mida Creek forest is the perfect place for you. You can explore the unspoiled forest by boat, kayak or even on foot at low tide, wading through the mangroves.

If you’re looking for something a bit more relaxing, you can enjoy a drink and watch the sunset at Lich House or Crab Shack, overlooking the lagoon.
