The Arabuko Sokoke Forest

Just a short drive from Watamu is a priceless natural treasure: a sanctuary of biodiversity that will capture your soul and enchant your eyes.

The Arabuko Sokoke Forest is a great example of a magnificent indigenous coastal forest ecosystem, which is unique to East Africa. This gem, known as the ‘narrow/fitta forest’ in the local language, covers 420 km², including a stretch of land that was once the emblem of the Indian Ocean coastline. The park covers about 6 km² of the majestic forest.

It’s impossible to not appreciates its beauty and importance. Declared the second most significant forest in Africa for bird conservation, Arabuko Sokoke is currently in the running for the prestigious World Heritage title. But this is not just about getting recognition: this is a story of challenges and successes, telling us that we can protect and preserve nature if we put our minds to it.

The forest has been a treasure since the days of British colonization. In fact, it was even proclaimed a Crown Reserve. Later on, its status was further consolidated when it was classified as a national park.

What to see and do in Arabuko Sokoke National Park

The real beauty of Arabuko Sokoke is its rich biodiversity. Just think that 20% of Kenya’s bird species, 30% of butterfly species and some 24 rare mammal species can be found here. These include the African elephant, the buffalo and the caracal.  You’ll also get to see some rare and endemic birds, like the Clarke’s Weaver, the Amani Sunbird, or the East Coast Akalat. Birdwatchers will love this experience.

The amazing creatures of the forest are a great example of nature’s incredible ability to adapt and thrive. You can explore the forest on off-road vehicle or on foot, as there are lots of hiking trails inside. We recommend planning your visit with the park’s nature guides, who are there to welcome travelers into this wild and precious realm.

In a world that’s increasingly focused on the concrete and the fast pace of modern life, places like Arabuko Sokoke remind us of the importance of slowing down, appreciating the beauty around us and protecting what makes this planet special. Every step through this magical forest is a chance to reconnect with nature and celebrate its enduring beauty.
